On Kamala Harris’ decision to skip the climate change town hall to attend a high dollar fundraiser, and the reversal.
I have to believe that people are fundamentally good. For the sake of my own sanity, I have to believe that a moral compass exists within the vast majority of people that compels them to be kind to one another, and act in good faith.
I’m not exactly sure if it’s any one thing in particular about politics, but there’s something about this profession that brings out the very worst in some people. Certain decisions are made public and corruption is exposed in such a devastating, brazen way that it becomes exhausting to even think about. But every once in a while, certain actions are so gross and revealing about a person’s true character, that it still causes us to stop and reflect about how perverse our system actually is.
Recently, it was brought to the attention of the American public that Presidential candidate Kamala Harris would be skipping the climate change town hall on CNN in order to attend a high dollar fundraiser. Needless to say, the backlash was immediate and Kamala Harris was forced to reschedule.
According to a Rolling Stone report:
“…Harris’ decision to attend the climate event comes after ABC News reporter Zohreen Shah’s reported early Monday that the Harris calendar conflict came from two fundraisers previously scheduled in Los Angeles by “top bundlers,” prompting a slew of criticism from progressive groups.”
She backpedalled, yet again, but the damage is already done.
Kamala Harris has sent a loud and clear message to not just the American people, but the world at large. The future of the planet and the existential threat of climate change do not matter as much as her big money fundraisers. The fact that this was an incredibly poor campaign decision is the least of my considerations. Frankly, I couldn’t care less about Kamala Harris’ campaign. No, I see this as an insult and a slap in the face to every single person who will be impacted by the effects of climate change in ways we can’t even possibly imagine. It is a disgrace to all the creatures we have the privilege of sharing this planet with, who we have a responsibility to protect.
The more I learn about Kamala Harris, the more I see her as the epitome of everything that the average American despises about the way politics is done in this country. At least Joe Biden has the decency to be upfront and honest, and we’ve known from the beginning that he is a moderate, “centrist” politician who is clear about his vision (or lack thereof). He may gaslight and fear-monger when it comes to policy proposals such as Medicare for All, but at least we know where his head is and what he supports. Kamala has been trying since the beginning of her campaign to have her cake and eat it to, and it’s maddening. We cannot afford another narcissistic sociopath in the Oval Office. One could argue that the survival of the species depends on electing someone with a conscience, and Kamala Harris clearly doesn’t have one.
I was surprised at how much this enraged me, given how unsurprising it is. But we should be angry about it. We should be as enraged as we are disheartened at the notion that this is where our political system has gotten us. As if the high dollar fundraisers weren’t insulting enough, the fact that she was willing to skip a nationally televised event addressing the single greatest threat facing our planet in order to attend those fundraisers is a whole new level of sickening.
As I said, the damage is done.
At this point it really doesn’t even matter if Kamala shows her face at that town hall or not. She has sent the message loud and clear about where her priorities lie, and thankfully, the American people have certainly begun to take notice. Kamala Harris does not deserve anyone’s support, and I’m glad more and more people have begun to realize that.
