Republican rule-of-law peacock Trey Gowdy signs up for Team Trump on impeachment

The Trump team showed its usual well-oiled-machine self Tuesday and Wednesday with conflicting reports over whether or not former South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy—the bombastic Benghazi tormentor of Hillary Clinton—will join the impeachment team. First he was on, then he was off. Trump‘s official communication outlet, Fox News, is now reporting he’s on, so it must be decided.

Here are some of Gowdy’s greatest hits from when the president was a Democrat. He presided over that 11-hour hearing in which Republicans tried and failed to break Hillary Clinton on Benghazi. During that process, he made clear what he expected of a presidential administration vis-a-vis Congress.

In 2012, he said, “The notion that you can withhold information and documents from Congress no matter whether you are the party in power or not in power is wrong. Respect for the rule of law must mean something, irrespective of the vicissitudes of political cycles.”

He also said, “The longer you remain silent, the longer you don’t turn over documents, a presumption begins to build that you’re withholding something. That’s human nature. That may not be a legal presumption, but that’s a common sense presumption.”

But that only counts when the president is a Democrat.
