What is going on? 10/10/19. Trump rallies, Rojava and more
I am sitting in hard times cafe. I just finished my homework for the college classes i take (i’m still a senior in high school, its a program).
Today, in a couple hours, a Trump rally is occuring in my city. I was on the coalition that organized the protest against it. I have no idea what the attendance is going to look like, but apparently we might outnumber the trump supporters. I’m going to the protest with my girlfriend isra hirsi, (a climate organizer that is semi famous). It’s very interesting the way that the politics of trump supporters manifest. There’s tens of thousands of them in the city at the moment. I talked to one and we talked about climate change.
I asked “Is climate change happening?”
He said “slowly”
“not slowly! countries in the global south are already going through ecological disaster!”
“not our problem”
what about the destruction of the global south? the incoming refugee crisis? the erosion of arable land? decreasing air quality?
“fuck the refugees”
By this point I just couldn’t continue talking to this person. These people are literally beyond dialogue. They don’t care about sustainability or humanity. I know I am generalizing, but this is an experience that has repeated numerous times.
Trump betrayed Rojava today. The Syrian civil war has been going on for some time, and the SDF has carved itself a home. Syrian Kurdistan (rojava) is a dream for anarchists. A literal “libertarian socialist” movement that has stood the test of time thus far. They have received some international leftist volunteers. Anarchists in particular are very taken in by them.
Trump announced he was pulling troops out of the region in preparation for Turkeys imminent invasion of the region. This has gotten him almost universal condemnation, not only by all of the western left, but even by conservative elements! (although they have much different reasons).
One of the pieces I read that kind of chokes me up is a report that this has totally surprised the militants in Rojava. So much so that they are standing their posts guarding ISIS prisoners and the like, pleading for US support. None is coming.
The US’s coalition with Rojava was always one of convenience. It put the US in a tricky situation of facilitating a leftist experiment. From the perspective of the US state, this shaky alliance undermined the states relationship with Turkey. So the decision of the US was to abandon Syrian Kurdistan.
Turkey apparently plans to resettle their Syrian refugees in this territory once the Kurd’s have been purged from the land.
The lesson to be drawn from this is that the US is not a good faith actor, and it will condemn any number of people to die for its geopolitical gain. Its a lesson that becomes more and more obvious as months pass.
The most recent article to come out mentioned that Turkey is beginning airstrikes in the region against the Kurds. The current outcry of the people in Rojava pleading for support will be short lived. No one is coming to the rescue. This is the end of an anarchist experiment.
In other unreported news, the Neoliberal president of Ecuador has fled the capital as indigenous revolutionaries are trying to overthrow him. Haiti has been in chaos for months. Where is the energy that the media gives to HK and Bolivia? the distinction is simple. Colombia, Haiti and Ecuador are US and capitalist friendly. So giving attention to their movements is counterproductive to the interests of our masters. However, the attention on China directly forwards US foreign policy goals. Interesting.
Maybe I will edit this after the protest. I wonder whether violence with occur in any significant capacity. The world is bleak.
