Former Vice President Joe Biden is no longer gung ho about impeaching President Donald Trump, going against many in his party who are desperate to railroad Trump no matter what the political consequences may be for doing so.
“We have to preserve our Constitution, our democracy,” Biden said during an appearance at a fundraiser on Monday night. “I don’t take impeachment lightly. I’ve been there for two. I don’t think it’s anything a country should have to go through if it can be avoided.”
“Is there enough reason to be indicted, figuratively speaking?” Biden asked at the event before an enraged donor responded with “Hell yeah!”
Desperate House Democrats are starting impeachment proceedings over a largely promulgated scandal regarding a supposedly improper phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Biden had previously supported the notion of impeachment but is cooling on his initial sentiments.
“Donald Trump has violated his oath of office, betrayed this nation, and committed impeachable acts,” Biden said while campaigning in New Hampshire. “To preserve our Constitution, our democracy, our basic integrity, he should be impeached.”
Biden, a lifetime creature of the Washington D.C. swamp, maybe starting to understand how impeachment could backfire against the Democrats. He saw how a Republican-dominated House impeached former President Bill Clinton only to see him win re-election in overwhelming numbers.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said that the resolution was produced “to eliminate any doubt as to whether the Trump Administration may withhold documents, prevent witness testimony, disregard duly authorized subpoenas, or continue obstructing the House of Representatives.”
The White House is undaunted by Democrats’ efforts.
“The resolution put forward by Speaker Pelosi confirms that House Democrats’ impeachment has been an illegitimate sham from the start as it lacked any proper authorization by a House vote,” the White House said in a statement.
“It continues this scam by allowing Chairman Schiff, who repeatedly lies to the American people, to hold a new round of hearings, still without any due process for the President.”
The statement continued: “The White House is barred from participating at all, until after Chairman Schiff conducts two rounds of one-sided hearings to generate a biased report for the Judiciary Committee.
Even then, the White House’s rights remain undefined, unclear, and uncertain — because those rules still haven’t been written. This resolution does nothing to change the fundamental fact that House Democrats refuse to provide basic due process rights to the Administration.”
