What Do Trump Voters Believe He’s Doing For Them? – Fourth Wave

He fails to protect us on every front

A popular story on Medium tells of a registered Democrat attending a Trump rally in New Hampshire and finding friendly and happy people there. “It was a group of people who felt like they had someone in their corner, that would fight for them,” Karlyn Borysenko wrote in After Attending a Trump Rally, I Realized Democrats Are Not Ready for 2020 which predicted a Trump sweep.

But I don’t understand what Trump supporters believe he’s done for them. Kept immigrants out of the country? Is that it? I think separating children from their families and putting them in cages at the border is pure evil — many have died! — and for that reason alone I could never vote for Trump.

As far as I can tell he’s making terrible decisions regarding our , rolling back protections for our air and water, opening up spaces for drilling and logging that were off limits before. He doesn’t believe in climate change, pulled out of the Paris Accord, and is actually suing California for its clean air laws!

He’s taking away . Roe v. Wade is close to being overturned, thanks to the two men he put on the Supreme Court (after Republicans cheated Obama out of a selection), maintaining the gender imbalance at 6/3.

He’s trying to dismantle and its protection of people with pre-existing conditions, reduce which helps the most vulnerable people in our society (including my son), and reduce and (despite his campaign promise to leave them alone) which help everybody who is old or hopes to grow old one day.

He’s like charging the secret service outrageous prices to stay at his properties. And he’s — inviting Russia to meddle in our elections; extorting Ukraine to do the same, getting the Justice Department and other agencies that are supposed to be independent to do his bidding by reducing the jail sentences of his friends, etc.

On top of all that, he’s a horrible, hate-filled man, who mocks and scorns and insults anyone who disagrees with him and thinks that’s admirable behavior. And his example has consequences. Since Trump took office, there’s been an increase in bullying at schools and white supremacist activity nationwide.

So where’s the good? The stock market is sky high, but that just means the rich are getting richer. Are most Trump voters rich? Is that it? I’m working class, and I don’t notice any reduction in my taxes or improvement in my financial health.

Borysenko mentions people being in a good mood and feeling proud of their country at the Trump rally, and contrasts that with the “doom and gloom” she felt at a democratic event. That’s really nice. But I want a lot more than a fun feeling from my president. I want policies that protect the environment, women’s rights, health care, and human rights — even rights of immigrants. And I want a person I can admire and respect in the White House.

Obviously, I’m a Democrat, and yes, I’m gloomy. So I get why the Dem events are less joyful than Trump’s. But I sure hope Borysenko is wrong about November.
